EA has, however, recently announced that it will be shutting down the servers for some fan-favorite games that have persisted for a long time thanks to their dedicated communities. Most of these games are over a decade old and only have a small community of gamers still using the servers. The shutdown will be gradual and have some impact on its player base. First, multiplayer servers will be shut down which means that these games can only be played in single-player or in ad-hoc LAN servers, if the game supports them. Second, any achievements that require online multiplayer will no longer be accessible. Players can still get achievements for single-player objectives. It is sad to see games like Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Mirror’s Edge, and Dragon Age: Origins no longer being supported. But these games had quite a good run. All three of these games were launched in 2009. Mirror’s Edge, an action-adventure platformer is now thirteen years old. The parkour-style traversal game sold over 2.5 million copies on all platforms. Its sequel Mirror’s Edge Catalyst wasn’t as well received as the original game. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is one of the more memorable of the C&C games. The server shutdown will have a big impact on the real-time strategy game as cooperative and multiplayer modes are its strong suits. However, the community around Red Alert 3 has already prepared for the servers going offline by creating their own service to host multiplayer games. Dragon Age: Origins is the first game of the popular RPG franchise. Its multiplayer screenshot server will be the only component affected by the shutdown as the game is mostly played offline. Fans of the franchise should be too worried as Bioware is reportedly working on a new Dragon Age game. The sunset for the servers of these games is a necessary part of the life cycle. EA issued a statement regarding the retirement of the game servers: Things are looking up for EA as the company is set to release some major titles in Need for Speed Unbound and Dead Space in the next few months. Some of the other games to watch out for are Wild Hearts and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which will be out in 2023.
