In case you missed it, the Black Widow star decided to sue Disney for its film release tactics. At the moment, Johansson’s lawsuit is still ongoing. With no settlement in the cards, more and more celebrities are showing the 36-year-old actress support. This now includes the legendary Jamie Lee Curtis, who couldn’t help but curse when expressing her thoughts about the aforementioned legal battle.
Jamie Lee Curtis gets candid over Johansson’s Kerfuffle against Disney
Black Widow was the first film in phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Technically, the movie took place before the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. However, it introduced several characters that will appear in future MCU films and TV shows. Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film saw its release date pushed back several times before it finally premieres on July 9 earlier this year. Despite the delay, the movie was an instant success. It currently holds the record for the highest domestic box office total for 2021. But, according to Johansson’s legal team, the take could have been much higher. The argument is predicated on Disney’s decision to release the film in theaters and Disney+ simultaneously. This hybrid release reportedly made Black Widow easy pickings for pirates. As Johansson continues to battle against the House of Mouse, it appears that she’s found herself an ally in Jamie Lee Curtis. In a touching tribute for Time, Jamie Lee Curtis expresses her admiration for the Hollywood actress. She opens up by saying that feels a “kinship” with Johansson. She then ends her piece by saying that “whether as an assassin with a conscience, an actor with an emotional center or, having just given birth to her second child, a fierce mother, the message is clear: Don’t f-ck with this mama bear.” The success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as a theater exclusive only serves as fuel for Johansson’s lawsuit. It also doesn’t help Disney’s case that it has decided to release more of its films exclusively in theaters. This backtracking in its decision-making suggests that Disney sees merit in what Johansson is fighting for, despite letting it go much longer than you’d think. As the number of supporters for Johansson grows, it will be interesting to see how and if Disney will change its stance going forward.
