Regional variations of Pokémon made their first appearance in Pokémon Sun and Moon, with the Alolan Forms of Pokémon. This was a collection of 18 Pokémon from the original 151 whose design has been changed to suit the Alola region, a location inspired by Hawaii. Galarian Pokémons are inspired by the UK and its history. Who knows, in the future, we will have Pokémons inspired by Japan?… oh wait. Each regional variation of Pokémon has both a different type and appearance than the original version. It is as if the creative department that created the PS5 logo was responsible for creating the new Pokémons. Yes, they are different, but we cannot say that they are innovative, right?
Galarian Forms Inspirations and References
Since Galar is based in the United Kingdom, Galarian Zigzagoon and Linoone were inspired by badgers, while Galarian Weezing was clearly inspired by the British Industrial Revolution. There is also a Galarian Pokémon exclusive for the version of the game you decide to buy, Sword or Shield. If you choose Pokémon Sword, then you can find Farfetch’d and Sirfetch’d, who could easily replace any of the knights at the round table. In Pokémon Shield, you can find the Galarian versions of Ponyta and Rapidash. Their new designs are clearly inspired by unicorns, Scotland’s national animal, with Rapidash’s dual nature type, psychic and fairy, paying homage to the mythological origins of the unicorn.

Galarian Forms in Pokemon Sword and Shield: Isle of Armor
Isle of Armor is the first DLC in the expansion pass package. In addition to new monsters, a large new area has been added as well as a small amount of story content. There is one new Galarian form in this DLC and as we don’t want to keep this one lonely, there is also a new Pokedex in Isle of Armor. Ok, what I’m gonna say now it’s weird… Even though Slowking is in Isle of Armor Pokedex, to unlock it you need an item only found in Crown Tundra’s DLC. Do not ask, no one has the answer.
Galarian Forms in Pokemon Sword and Shield: Crown Tundra
The Crown Tundra is both the name of the second expansion and the name of the area you are going to explore. As with the first expansion, it adds a lot of new Pokemons and among these, four new Galariam Forms. One is the aforementioned Slowking, new final evolution for Galarian Slowpoke. The other three Pokemons are eventually unlocked in the second part of the expansion, in a quest called “A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three”. Your goal is to capture the new shapes of the three legendary birds of the first generation: Zapdos, Articuno and Moltres. Yes, you have another Pokedex. And that’s it, all the new Galarian forms included in the base game and the DLCs. They are not necessarily stronger than their traditional forms, just different. What will really give you an advantage in battles is knowing how to exploit the enemies’ weaknesses according to the types of Pokemon and if you want a guide to Pokemon’s types, look no further than exactly where you are.
