If you, like any other beginner, feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of perks available for you to choose in Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic epic, then don’t worry, because you’re not alone. Scroll down below if you want to learn more about the best perks in Fallout 4.
1. Idiot Savant
Regardless of how you want to play Fallout 4, Idiot Savant is one of the few perks that we feel that you should always get. Basically, as a perk, what Idiot Savant does is reward your player for being as dumb as possible by randomly giving you XP bonuses. Many players have taken advantage of this by saving just before completing a quest and repeatedly loading from that save until the perk activates to get as much free XP as possible. In a way, this is cheating. However, no matter how you look at it, it makes Idiot Savant a must-have perk.
2. Strong Back
Rule No. 1 in any RPG is to pick up as many non-essential items that you can so that you can sell them off for whatever the game’s currency is as soon as possible. However, Fallout 4 makes this difficult because there’s a limit to how much you can carry at one time. Strong Back helps solve that by letting you carry 50 pounds more (at Rank 2) and even then, you can leave it at that. If you want to be able to do more stuff while carrying on extra weight, we suggest that you level up Strong Back up to Rank 5, which reduces the number of action points it consumes while running by as much as 50%.
3. Lifegiver
No matter how you look at it, the key to enjoying your life in the wastelands in Fallout 4 is to be as durable as possible. Lifegiver is a perk that lets you do just that, and more, because, at Rank 3, Lifegiver gives you an additional 20 health points (for a total of 60 added maximum health points) and lets you slowly regenerate any health that you might have lost. The regeneration isn’t quick or instant, but considering how much damage you’ll be taking in Fallout 4, what’s important is that it helps you survive better.
4. Action Boy/Girl
Action Boy or Action Girl is one of the oldest perks in the Fallout franchise. It’s been part of every game, and there’s a good reason for this. Action Points are important in any Fallout game. However, what makes the Fallout 4 version of this perk unique is that it doesn’t increase the amount of AP points that you have access to. Instead, what the perk does is that it makes the regeneration of AP points faster. At Rank 3, your AP points will start to regenerate 75% faster, which is great as it gives you a chance to use VATS nearly every time that you’d want.
5. Critical Banker
Critical Hits in Fallout 4 are one of the best ways to make quick work of tougher enemies. However, you can’t exactly always rely on them. At least, not unless you have a high enough rank on the Critical Banker perk. At Rank 4, the Critical Banker perk lets you save up to 4 Critical Hits in the V.A.T.S system that you can use whenever you want.
6. Sneak
Was this really ever any surprise? Even if you’re the type to go in guns blazing, having the Sneak perk leveled up in Fallout 4 will let you sneak past certain enemies more effectively. At the same time, you’ll no longer trigger floor-based traps and mines at Rank 2 and Rank 3, effectively. At Rank 5, the Sneak perk lets you instantly disengage with far-away enemies simply by sneaking, which is extremely over-powered in many situations. The best part about getting the Sneak perk in Fallout 4 is that the perk synergizes so well with the other perks in the game. For example, you can deal far more damage to enemies using Sneak if it’s used in conjunction with perks like Critical Banker and that’s just one of the many ways that you can take advantage of the Sneak perk.
7. Lone Wanderer
First things first, companions are fun in Fallout 4 and they help add a different layer of complexity to the gameplay. However, they’re not exactly necessary, and with Dogmeat around, having one more companion can be too much for some people. If you feel like all you need is yourself and your dog in Fallout 4, then, by all means, get the Lone Wanderer perk. This perk is the best perk in Fallout 4 as it lets you take less damage, deal more damage, and allows you to carry more, as well as give you more action points to play with. These are all essentials in Fallout 4, especially if you’re playing alone.
8. Wasteland Whisperer
Master the post-apocalypse and channel your inner Ash Ketchum (you know, from the Pokemon series) by capturing creatures that wander the wastelands of Fallout 4. We know that it seems like a novel perk than something that’s actually factional, but trust us, you won’t be thinking that once you have this leveled up to Rank 3 and you have a Deathclaw by your side ready to rip anyone who opposes the two of you to shreds.
9. Scrounger and Fortune Finder
Looting is essential in a game like Fallout 4, which is why we recommend getting both the Scrounger and Fortune Finder perks. One increases the amount of ammunition that you can get from looting and the other lets you discover caps as you loot. Both are just as important as the other, so there’s no reason not to get just one of the two.
10. Gun Nuts
Gun Nuts is a relatively overpowered perk considering how cheap it is as it lets you mod your firearms to make them more powerful. At higher ranks, you can do anything from increase the damage of your weapons to giving it a larger magazine to play with or even improving the rate of fire so you can down more enemies with fewer bullets in less time. If you’re a true looter, finding stuff to use for upgrades using this perk will take no time, which is exactly why we recommend getting it.
