The villain, who is portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, is the ruler of the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. He is front and center in the latest story trailer that Ubisoft released for Far Cry 6 at Gamescom 2021, which shows audiences just how awful he really is.
Is Anton Castillo the worst villain of Far Cry 6?
Far Cry games aren’t just judged based on their gameplay and story, they must also have memorable villains. The golden standard so far is Vaas Montenegro, who is largely the reason why we ranked Far Cry 3 as the best Far Cry game ever. However, the series has also produced other equally terrifying villains. For example, there was Far Cry 4’s Pagan Min, who wasn’t necessarily just a villain. Meanwhile, Far Cry 5’s Joseph Seed was a menacing presence who charmed his way to creating his own cult. With so many “good” villains in the games that preceded it, Far Cry 6 has a lot to live up to. Although we’ll have no idea just how good Giancarlo Esposito’s Anton Castillo is going to be, we already know from the story trailer that he has no place on Earth. As the tyrannical ruler of Yara, Castillo isn’t above reinforcing his rule using extreme measures. He’s even seen putting a gun into his son’s hand, turning him into a murderer at a young age. This alone would’ve been enough to condemn Castillo, but he does far worse things. For one thing, Castillo maintains an iron grip on Yara because its scientists have discovered an effective cure for cancer, from the tobacco crops grown on the island. This is all fine and dandy until you realize that the reason why he enslaved the people of the island and why he is so rich is that he is profiteering from all their hard work. He keeps everyone on a tight leash because he knows just how valuable of a resource Yara has. The trailer even shows him killing a boat full of people for no apparent reason, which is just downright evil. With all that’s happened so far, you can’t exactly blame the citizens of Yara for taking up arms. The story trailer does an excellent job at giving players extra motivation to play Far Cry 6 to know more about the story. It’ll definitely be interesting to see the debates, following the game’s release on October 7, as to where Anton Castillo ranks among Far Cry villains. We have a feeling that he’s going to rank near the top. Then again, who knows? Maybe the villains can just settle who’s the worst of them all among themselves via the Season Pass?
