The Witcher Season 3 just concluded filming in London a few days ago. Executive producer Steve Gaub announced that the Netflix Original series has wrapped up production on Instagram. Filming for Season 3 started in March 2022 and took place in a number of locations across the United Kingdom, parts of Europe, and Africa. The production suffered a delay as Cavill tested positive for Covid-19 and filming was halted to decontaminate the set. In a short letter, Henry Cavill thanked the cast and crew for their dedication to the series in what he describes as a “tough shoot”. He hopes that everyone involved can get some well-deserved rest. The Witcher Season 3 will now move to post-production, which may take several months to complete given the magnitude of the series.
What we know about the plot
The new season of the Witcher will most likely build on the major plot reveal at the end of Season 2; that Ciri is the daughter of Emhyr var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard. In Season 2, the White Flame was a central, albeit mysterious, figure in Nilfgaard’s war against the Northern Kingdoms. Ciri will also continue her training as Witcher with Geralt, and also as a sorcerer under the tutelage of Yennefer. The trio is also in hiding as multiple factions have been tasked with capturing Ciri. They will eventually find themselves in the magical academy of Aretuza as Yennefer seeks to discover more of Ciri’s untapped magical powers. While in Aretuza, Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are caught in the middle of a fight between sorcerers supporting the Northern Kingdom and mages who are loyal to the Nilfgaardian Empire, in what is known as the Thanned Coup. Geralt must find a way to protect his family from all that look to harm them. The plot for Season 3 is based on the book Time of Contempt, which is the second book of the Witcher Saga and the fifth novel written by Andrzej Sapkowski for The Witcher.
When is Season 3 coming out?
Netflix has not officially given a release date for Season 3. A release date is normally announced when the final cut has been approved by producers and other executives of the show. Season 1 of the Netflix series took six months to complete post-production while Season 2 underwent seven months of work. We can therefore estimate that the release of Season 3 of The Witcher will be sometime around March or April of 2023. The previous two seasons of the show both premiered in December. The prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, will be taking over the December premiere slot of the original series this year. Netflix has not yet released an official trailer for Season 3 of the Witcher.
